
For Florence W. Wambugu, every step of her academic and professional journey has been guided by a single question: “How am I making a positive impact to serve the community?” That commitment to improving lives has shaped a career that bridges science, sustainability, and global engagement.
After joining the University of Connecticut’s Ph.D. program in Chemistry in 2022, Florence began researching cannabinoid-derived materials in Professor Greg Sotzing’s laboratory. As she explored the potential of these renewable materials, she recognized an opportunity to address two important challenges simultaneously: reducing reliance on petroleum-based plastics and improving public health.
Her research focused on developing polymers derived from cannabidiol (CBD) with antimicrobial properties. Through her work, Florence demonstrated the potential for these materials to inhibit bacterial growth, making them promising candidates for safer medical products.
The inspiration behind this research was deeply personal. After losing family friends to healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), Florence became determined to help address a problem that affects millions of hospitalized patients worldwide. HAIs remain a significant risk for patients requiring catheters, wound dressings, and other medical devices, many of which are made from conventional petroleum-based polymers that can promote bacterial colonization. By designing antimicrobial, cannabinoid-derived polymers, Florence hopes to contribute to a new generation of medical materials that not only reduce infection risks but are also more environmentally sustainable.
Her doctoral research culminated in her dissertation, “Designing Antimicrobial Monomers for Infection-Resistant Polymer Materials: Insights from Cannabinoid-Derived Scaffolds.” She presented this work at the 2026 American Chemical Society Middle Atlantic Regional Meeting and in a seminar at the Institute of Materials Science (IMS) in April 2026. A manuscript based on her research is currently under review for publication.
Florence’s commitment to serving communities began long before graduate school. Prior to entering UConn, she worked for a consulting firm that helped connect U.S. businesses with opportunities in Kenya. Serving as a liaison between companies and local communities, she encouraged organizations to adopt practices that respected both the people and the natural environment. Her goal was to help businesses look beyond their bottom line and create lasting value for the communities in which they operated, while supporting Kenya’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability.
Looking ahead, Florence plans to return to her family’s farm in Nyeri, Kenya, where she hopes to apply her scientific expertise to sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship. She also looks forward to returning to one of her longtime passions—auto racing—where she is already exploring ways to make the sport more sustainable through greener technologies.
Whether in the laboratory, the boardroom, on the farm, or at the racetrack, Florence’s work is driven by the same enduring purpose: using science and innovation to create positive change. Her next chapter promises to be just as impactful as the journey that brought her here.
